The Labiaplasty Procedure

Labiaplasty, also known as labial reduction or labioplasty, is a minimally invasive surgery designed to improve the shape of the inner lips (labia minora) or outer lips (labia majora) of the vagina. Performed in our in-office operating room, the labial reduction procedure takes about two hours and can be done under a general or local anesthetic.

The procedure begins with Dr. Thompson making incisions based on the composition of the patient’s labia. Dr. Thompson will then proceed to trim down and re-contour large or irregular labia using specialized scissors, a scalpel, or a laser. In addition, the labia majora, or outer lips, can be reduced through either surgery or liposuction. If the patient desires, Dr. Thompson can also correct clitoral hooding. Once the procedure is complete, the incisions are closed using sutures. Most of our patients are pleased to learn that the sutures used to close the incisions are absorbable, so they dissolve on their own. As labiaplasty is a relatively minor surgery, patients are generally able to drive themselves home after the procedure. During the consultation prior to surgery, Dr. Thompson lays out what labiaplasty recovery entails for his Kansas City patients. Tenderness and swelling are typically experienced after surgery; patients also have to abstain from rigorous activity for a time to avoid prolonging the healing process, which takes up to six weeks.
