Rhinoplasty Overview
Rhinoplasty is the reshaping of the bone and cartilage of the nose. This cosmetic surgery procedure is used to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose or to repair damage, including trauma or birth defects. Before undergoing any cosmetic procedure, weigh the risks and side effects and determine whether it is right for you. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about rhinoplasty surgery.
Who should consider rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty may be considered by those who feel that their nose is unattractive. Rhinoplasty is also appropriate for patients who have experienced nose trauma, commonly a broken nose, or have difficulty breathing due to the structure of their nose. The results of a nose job can range from subtle to significant, depending on your goals. This level of customization makes rhinoplasty a very popular plastic surgery option for many patients. Rhinoplasty should only be performed on a fully developed nose; it can be performed on older teens or on adults of any age.
How is the procedure performed?
Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, and the entire procedure takes just a few hours. It is performed under either general or local anesthetic. Your plastic surgeon will make small incisions to access the cartilage and bone underneath the skin. This cartilage and bone, which gives the nose its shape, is sculpted as desired. Then the skin and soft tissues are replaced and the incisions are closed. Tape or a splint on the outside of the nose will hold it in the correct shape.
What is the rhinoplasty recovery period like?
After your nose job, you’ll need to rest with your head elevated for about a week. Expect facial swelling and bruising for several days after your procedure. You should not return to strenuous activities until your nose has healed. Some shifting or settling of the nose can be expected for one full year.
What are the risks associated with a nose job?
Like all surgical procedures, rhinoplasty does have a few risks, although it is generally a very safe procedure. Rarely, bleeding, scarring, or infection may occur. Talk to your surgeon about any concerns you may have about the risks associated with rhinoplasty surgery.
